Saleem Abbas Participates in International Journalism Institute 2008

U.S. State Department Program at the University of Florida teaches latest techniques for digital journalism

GAINESVILLE, Florida, USA Mr. Saleem Abbas, Assistant Professor of Mass Communication Department, Forman Christian College Lahore, Pakistan is participating in a six-week Study of the United States Institute on Journalism and Media, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and run by the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications. The Institute will teach journalism and mass communication professors from around the world how to use and teach the latest technologies and techniques being developed for digital journalism.

The institute will teach participants about the American press, and give them hands-on experience in blogging, multimedia and other areas. “New Freedoms in Media: Teaching the Digital Journalism of Tomorrow” takes place in Gainesville for four weeks and Miami, Tampa, Washington, D.C., and New York for two weeks. A combination of hands-on technology instruction and illustrations of its use in covering the American political process will help the professors develop better methods of teaching new journalism techniques at their home institutions. The exchange of ideas by participants will enrich the experience and help build a worldwide network of journalism and mass communication educators. “We found last year that it was the mix of cultures that made the institute special,” said the program’s academic director, Lauren Hertel, a telecommunication lecturer at the college.

Now in its second year, the institute is building on the success of the 2007 program, and is using comments from first-year participants to improve and enhance the methods and materials taught in class. “We’ve adjusted the balance of lectures and practical training from last year, based on feedback from the participants,” Hertel said.

Participants in last summer’s institute have told the college they’ve continued using what they learned, noted Associate Dean for Research Sylvia Chan-Olmsted, principal investigator of the (US) $280,000 grant the college received from the U.S. State Department to run the institute. “They went away appreciating the complexity of the American society and media, the diversity and energy of the United States,” Chan-Olmsted said. “The online skill sets that they acquired here are also very useful to many of them in their home countries.”

Institute participants will return home ready to teach a new generation of journalists the methods and techniques used to take advantage of the latest technologies employed by newspapers, television and radio stations, and periodicals around the world. The institute’s classes, taught by faculty members of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, focus on “teaching the teachers”, to maximize the impact of each session.

Participants in the Study of the U.S. Institutes are among the 40,000 people who take part in exchanges managed by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) each year. Other ECA exchange programs include the Fulbright Program and the International Visitor Leadership program. Through a range of academic and professional exchanges, the bureau seeks to increase mutual understanding between the United States and other countries.
